Daly Finishes Strong; Play Suspended Due to Darkness

DALLAS – The #8 Arkansas men’s golf team is 16-under par but stands in seventh place at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup, played at the par 72 Trinity Forest Golf Club. There were 36 holes scheduled for Monday, but play was suspended due to darkness.

Arkansas was tied for fifth after 18 holes Monday at -9 (279) thanks to a 66 by Jacob Skov Olesen and a 69 from John Driscoll III.

However, Razorback redshirt sophomore John Daly II did finish all 36 holes Monday and turned in rounds of 70-67. The 5-under=par 67 vaulted Daly 10 spots into a tie for seventh, three shots off the lead. He opened round two on hole 10 and started with a birdie. He added birdies on holes 14, 16, 1 and 2 to get to 5-under. He dropped a shot on the par-5, 6th but sank a birdie putt on the tough par-3, 8th to get back to 5-under. He closed his round with a big drive on hole 9 just before the horn sounded to signal play was suspended. However, he had the option to finish the hole and followed by an iron shot to about 15 feet. He just missed the birdie putt and settled for par.

In round one, Daly opened with birdies on holes 1 and 3. He fell to 1-over through 11 holes but birdied holes 12, 17 and 18 to post a 70.

San Diego State was the only team to complete all 36 holes on Monday and are -24 (286-266). The Aztecs were -24 in round two and are in third place. Florida State leads at -36, shooting 17-under in the morning session and is -19 in round two with one-to-three holes to play. SMU is -26 and in second. The Mustangs were tied with Arkansas at -9 after 18 holes but are -17 in the second round with three-to-five holes to play. LSU led after 18 holes at -19 but are just 3-under in round two with three-t0-five holes to play.

Olesen was even par through 15 holes in round two with two bogeys and two birdies. He was -6 in round one and standing in a tie for 12th. In the morning session, he was even through nine holes with a bogey and a birdie. He opened his inward nine with an eagle and added four birdies to post his second-best round of his career with a 66.

Driscoll, coming of his first collegiate win, is currently tied for 18th at -5 through 33 holes. He fired a 3-under 69 in round one. He was 1-over on his opening nine holes but had back-to-back birdies on holes 1 and 2 (his 10th and 11th holes) and posted a birdie on his final hole – the par-4, 6th – before play was suspended due to darkness.

Manuel Lozada was even par with one hole to play before finishing round two and he is tied for 37th at +3 for the tournament. Thomas Curry finished all 36 holes and is +5 to stand in 39th.

After stroke play is completed on Tuesday, the top four teams will compete in match play on Wednesday
